Carry on up the jungle

Before I forget, I must set down some words about my recent adventures in gardening. The garden in my new place (see earlier) was very wild and overgrown and I wanted to get it in order before the summer so I could actually use it. After my recent spell in hospital (see not-quite-so earlier) of course, I couldn’t do it all by myself so I had to draft in some friends, and thus it was that I went from Carry On Doctor to Carry On Up the Jungle.

And, ooh, it was epic!

My chief conscripts for this escapade were my good friend and her strapping husband who has the physique of the Incredible Hulk. While she reeled off Latin plant names, within a few minutes he had reduced an enormously oversized Bay tree (Laurus nobilis) by 70%. He was literally carrying small trees out of my garden! There was so much wood and foliage that now needs to be burned that we could build a mighty bonfire and dance round it naked, should we want to. (It be an old custom in these parts, I’m told.) It was exhausting but great fun. The gardening, not the dancing naked. Unfortunately, due to my recent confinement, I could only do so much, so sat in a deck chair, supervising operations. As a matter of fact, I did do quite a lot of work, and actually dragged away a small tree by myself. We discovered brooms and other gardening equipment magically entwined within plants, with branches growing in and around them – the broom was hovering three feet off the ground in a grape vine. (Vitis vinifera.) One horrific sight was a colony of snails (Cornu aspersum) living behind the Honeysuckle! (Lonicera Caprifolium)

(Enough with the Latin, already.)

The following weekend my friends and I were sitting in the garden, drinking red wine, eating take-away pizza and burning the debris. Which was wonderfully aromatic, as most of it was the Bay leaves! Roll on summer, I say!
