Flower fairies
Flower fairies seem very popular and I have been very lucky to have had the opportunity to work on projects with both Templar Publishing and Ivy Press on published books and dummy books for book fairs all about flower fairies! Something I had previously never been asked to do!
Flower fairies: For both these projects I used flowers and British wild flowers as a source of inspiration for their clothes, colours and surroundings. I also used many wild flowers in the artwork too, which was something they wanted.
For Templar Publishing I worked on two book fair projects. The artwork for the first was for the jacket and was intended for a dummy pop-up book about fairies and flowers, but it was far more than that as the whole thing unfolded into a dolls-house – very ingenious! The second project was also for a more traditional pop-up book.
For Ivy Press I was commissioned to illustrate a pop-up book entitled The Fairy Midnight Surprise Party, which seems to be doing quite well. This was great fun to work on and very brightly coloured. You alway lose a certain amount of the brightness once it is printed, because printers use CMYK technology, which does tone everything down. So when producing artwork for something that needs to be very bright when published, you almost have to overdue the colour in the original artwork.

This artwork shows the rough on the left and the finished artwork on the right and was commissioned by Templar Publishing. The next is the rough for The Princess Fairies pop up book and the third image is the finished artwork.
