Hobbledown pictures: As this project was highly illustrated I have plenty of pictures to share with you. All the interior illustrations that appear throughout the book were created using a technical pencil, but a soft 2B led. I use a technical pencil simply because it means I do not have keep stopping to sharpen it! There is nothing worse than concentrating on getting a piece of artwork just right and then having to stop because your pencil has run out of led or needs sharpening! The writer – the wonderful and good humoured Angela J Kecojevic gave me very useful instructions on how she saw the various characters in the story, and it was then up to me to turn those into pictures.
The heroes are called ‘Hobblers’ and look very much like children with a slight elfishness about them. Then we have the ‘Skibbler’s’, the baddies who are ugly, very smelly and really quite obnoxious – therefore fab to draw! Not forgetting one very scary monster, called ‘Rumpletump’ who absolutely loves custard pies! There are also lots of animals throughout the story, mainly because Hobblers are farmers and keep lots of animals as well as harvesting various things! They rather remind me of J. R. R. Tolkien’s ‘Hobbits’. The book itself is wonderfully written and something your child will definitely enjoy reading!
