Oil illustrations
Oil illustrations… Now that is not a very common medium at all when working in the field of illustration, but you can get some great results and very rich colours indeed.
Oil illustrations: I combined working with oils and my more cartoony style and was quite pleased with the results. When I do use oils I favour Schmink artists’s quality oils, because they are specifically made for painting in glazes, rather than thickly and in an opaque way, say with a knife or hogs hair brush! For illustrations you need a far less heavy handed way of working with oils and I find applying the oils in thin glazes with a Kolinsky sable brush a much better way to work.

I have yet to be commissioned to work on a book using this style, which is such a shame. A few years ago Templar were very tempted, but then the project was dropped, as so many are in this most fickle of industries!
The cat and dog are called Gizmo and Scatz, and along with a friend who I had asked to write a story around them we put together a simple picture book. Sadly my friend has since passed away, but she was a good writer and very fun person to know. Bless you, Jazz.
