Usborne books

Usborne books of British History

Usborne books: This was a slightly different project for me, as I mostly do fiction illustration. For this commission I had to work on a very small scale, as all the images in the book were around postage stamp size. All the contributing artists therefore had to produce tiny artwork, but as a whole it was very effective and a rather clever idea of Usborne Books.

I had to concentrate on the Georgian period, the Edwardian period, the First World War, the Boston Tea Party and the sinking of the Titanic! I also had to draw people, parasols, furniture and even crockery!

The illustrations were created using nib pen and coloured inks and have a sligthly cartoony feel to the styling, which is what Usborne Books wanted for this particular book and I think it works well as a visual dictionary.

Here are some pictures from the work I completed of mainly people! Obviously what you are seeing below are the images very large indeed (well two are) – hence the rather thick black linework. In the book they were slightly larger than POSTAGE STAMP size!!!
