Animal illustrations is something I should be drawing a lot more!
Animal illustrations: I recently had a ‘portfolio surgery’ with the wonderful, Fig Taylor at the Association of Illustrators. She is an interesting lady, with much insight into the industry. I would recommend her actually. You don’t have to be a member of the AOI, but you do get a reduction for the fee you must pay for the consultation if you are a member! It is worth joining, as I have found them very supportive when I have had the odd sticky moment with a client. She spotted in my work that I am not bad at illustrating animals and made some suggestions. Firstly to add more animal illustrations to my portfolio, which is what I am currently working on. I actually do enjoy drawing animals more than people, and it obviously shows in my work. Although I was blissfully unaware of it.
So with that in mind I thought I would share some sketches of animals I have done in the past. Also some recent scribblings. Some of the sketches were for clients such as Templar Publishing and Heritage Art Papers, and others samples for my website or individual clients.
The following are sketches for Templar Publishing. I was trying for the new Little Grey Rabbit books. Unfortunately I was runner-up out of a lot of illustrators. The illustrator that got the commission was far more ahead than myself, as the publishers had approached her weeks earlier. So I missed out by a hair’s width! I have also included some others too!
