Black and White Art…
Is very dramatic and sometimes works even better than full-colour, but it does depend on your story and the way you want to portray it.
I thought I’d take the opportunity today to share some black and white work with you. Some illustrations are very scribbly and others are refined silhouettes that I have created for a range of books, written by the writer of the infamous Agatha Raisin, M. C. Beaton who sadly died last December. They are published as audio books with Little Brown Books. I have also created a set of silhouettes, inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice for a lingerie company called Poule de Luxe. I was pleasantly surprised by the results and I’m guessing it’s a popular textile pattern, because it’s still on sale on their website!
White on Black
This illustration and the one above are simple sketches that have been scanned and inverted in Photoshop. 
They are amazingly effective for such a simple idea and remind me of sketches drawn on an old-fashioned school blackboard. I wonder if they are still used today or whether its all computer tablets now…? If there are any teachers out there you can drop me a message and let me know!
Regency meets Hobblers…
Her are some examples of silhouettes I have created for different clients, such as Little Brown Books, Hobbledown and the Jane Austen Society of North America. Silhouettes can be dramatic and are often used for logos, as well as literature. The Hobbledown silhouettes were used for their logo and also signage at the fantasy farm and theme park. I haven’t created any for absolutely ages, but am always happy to create them. All are hand-drawn and then the silhouette is created in Photoshop. Contact me here if you would like a silhouette.
