Cats, love ’em or hate ’em…
Here is a selection of cat illustrations from my archive. I’m actually drawing anything but cats for clients right now. However next week is a cat-themed Facebook week, so cats it is!
I’ve created fairy cats in teapots (yep, absolutely true), farm cats, scaredy cats, very ferocious cats and silly cats for myself and clients. They seem a very popular subject matter, so as an artist you get to paint and draw loads!
Stylish cats
I’m sharing a selection in this post today and if you have a sharp eye you will notice that the style I have drawn them in does vary a little bit. That is a cocktail mix of old, defunct styles and occasionally style requests from clients. I must be honest and say that it is always best to get an illustrator to work in the their own style than ask them to imitate your favourite. It can be done, of course but we’re a silly lot and prefer our own way of scribbling and painting. I suppose it’s a bit like asking a carpenter to make a table in fake, plastic wood, if you see what I mean? Some of the artwork is fully hand-drawn and hand-painted and some digital. I’ve included two illustrations below, based on a similar theme to show the difference. One works better translated on to t-shirts, iPhone skins, etc., and the other on greetings cards and stationary. Maybe have a look at both and see which works best with which. A little puzzle for you…
Humour!
One thing they will have in common is my sense of humour. I can’t help myself. Sometimes it is very subtle and other times, I illustrate to create a guffaw or at least a nice smile. However, I do cute, whimsical and sentimental too.
