Character development
This morning I was reading a very interesting article online, whilst drinking my coffee and munching toast. I realised with a sudden shock I have overlooked something very important on my website! The article was all about character development. I immediately slapped my head with my hand in utter disbelief (marmalade mess avoided.) I realised that I haven’t done what the article was suggesting myself. To show Art Editors I can do character development. Show you that I can always draw the same character in different poses, with a range of emotions and doing varied fun things!
Character development is very important indeed. If you cannot develop a character and always draw that same character doing different things, then you cannot really hope to illustrate a story. I remember it was one of the first things Oxford University Press asked me about fifteen years ago! So it is high on a publisher’s priority list. They are also keen to know whether you have the ability to show you can actually tell a story through your illustrations. If you cannot do that, give up now! They also like to know whether you can draw everything in the known universe, as they are taking a leap of faith in commissioning you, but that’s another blog post on it’s own.
I would like to end on a message to all those Art Editor’s out there that have not worked with me yet, firstly I would like to say “why not?” Secondly, as you can see from the character sheet, I certainly can illustrate characters over and over again.
