Diggers or dinosaurs
Diggers or dinosaurs are always a winner with little boys. As part of my three picture books I have written one all about diggers, tractors and trucks.
Diggers or dinosaurs: This illustration is the front cover artwork of the third picture book, I am hoping to have published. It is my first venture into writing and illustrating children’s books. The third book was a toss up between diggers or dinosaurs and I decided to go for diggers. It is currently being looked at by Campbell Publishing (Pan MacMillan) at their next creative meeting. Of course that doesn’t mean a bean, but I am still pleased that it didn’t go straight into a round receptacle!
The illustration has been created using watercolours with a wet-in-wet and splash it everywhere technique, which was very therapeutic. I aim to do much more in this style, as I enjoy the finished results. I use quite posh paper, as it is Italian hand made watercolour paper. It is also not free and as smooth as a baby’s bottom to work on.
I got the idea for the three books from my experiences of doing story time sessions with legions for under four year olds. I developed a game to get their attention and get them listening to the stories, and suddenly realised it could work as a picture book. And an idea was born…next it’s dinosaurs…
